'Because we're capable of so much more than the statistics on the news'
I went to Newton Faulkner's concert tonight. He is absolutely amazing. I can't even begin to describe how brilliant it was, but I'll just say this: I was speechless by the end of the night. And for those that know me, you'd know that that's a fair achievement as I usually don't shut up.
His music has a way of getting to me when it's on a cd. It was so much more than that when it was live.
F, my friend from uni who I went with, and I were so surprised to learn that he is also a goofball, a dag, and as such is utterly hilarious too. I went from actual tears to tears of laughter in a relatively short space of time, more than once.
My thoughts aren't really coherent right at this minute, so I will just put a few points down here:
- I knew he was a great vocalist, and I like his style of guitar playing. However, I didn't realise just how great a guitarist he is. F is a classical guitarist, and her jaw was frequently dropping at the skill he displayed. And then explained to me why.
- One hilarious moment (for us at least) was when he casually said this 'This next song is designed to be a Disney-style sing-a-long. We tried to get the bouncing ball thing happening, but it's a lot more difficult than it looks... so we have a powerpoint.' XD XD XD
- I am both glad he didn't perform 'Uncomfortably Slow' and wish that he did. I would have been an emotional wreck, but it would have been beautiful.
- He got the audience to sing along at one point, and it was actually in tune ... epic huh? Even more so was that he gave us this insanely long spiel about a 'barbarian horde' that we were about to do battle with (this had nothing to do with the song itself, btw) and even managed to add that we were battling them because they had 'kissed you mum' ... XD
- I don't know how it's possible for one guy with his guitar to perform Bohemian Rapsody so well. Youtube it. You won't regret it.
- The last song, 'I'm Not Giving Up Yet' was so moving. So beautiful, so passionate.
And lastly, he is such a muso. I know it sounds stupid saying it, because well, duh, but he basically 'narrated' the show half to himself and half to the audience ... The best one was when he was explaining all these effects he was using and such. He'd demonstrate a little bit, then add something, then add something else, then said 'So, yeah, you now know what I do with me spare time' *trails off, looks at ground*
F and I were laughing so hard by this point.
I didn't think it was possible for me to love his music (and him) any more than I did. I was so very very wrong.

(Yes, I am catching up with lj posts. Shuddup)
Seriously, he sounds awesome.
I mean, I know the music is, but a good concert is more than just good music- it's about the performance, and sounds like you had an epic time. GOOD.

I also kept opening and shutting my mouth goldfish-style because I had no words. No coherent ones anyway :P
