So, I was going to post yesterday once I'd finished my essay, because I figured that 400 words should only take me a couple of hours. I was wrong. I was up until 1am, and I still have to shave off a few words and fix up the referencing. It's been a fairly stressful couple of days, but with some great and amusing moments in between. Most of the stress related to 2 of my assessments including that essay, and my orchestra prac thingy. Anyway, I'm feeling much better about all of that now, so I shall recount the better parts of the last few days.
Our lecturer for the 'Classical Period' in Music History is full of win. Seriously. Here's a sample:
- 'Symphony became standardised. So, symphony is the McDonald's french fries of the music world'
(prompting F to add: Can I supersize my symphony please?)
- 'The key *pause* ... is key! *winks, waits for the inevitable groan*'
- 'Baroque musicians were amazing improvisors, it was us that made Classical music uncool'
- 'This won't be on the exam, so stress thee not!'
- 'TA-DAAHHH D MAJOR, not oh g'day i'm dmajor.....'
- 'Coda: YES THE END (no really) Oh wait ... NOW IT'S THE END'
We also listened to a part of a symphony, and his reactions were so funny. Like, I'm sure some of them were put on - but some weren't.
For example, there was a sudden entry with a key change, and he full-on jumped and went 'ooh'. And he was restraining himself, in the sense that you could see he wanted to full on wave his arms around. His facial expressions were gold too...
This was just the stuff we (and by we I mean H) wrote down XD
I swear, B (my little piano student) is so adorable. It's funny what kids pick up though, he was so proud that he'd learnt the 'do re mi' song from The Sound Of Music, so naturally I used that to help with his playing. I didn't expect him to be able to coordinate what I was telling him with playing the notes in just 3 weeks. =)
My title is from one of the funnier moments of today - H and I were driving to uni, chatting with my ipod on shuffle in the background. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, H's brain obviously zooms in on the song, and starts singing along mid-sentence... I just giggled. Then it was into discussions of how random my ipod is, going from Saosin to Kelly Clarkson, and then things like The Corrs. Also, singing along to 'Part of Your World' is always awesome.
One last thing for tonight, it's not often you sit in a university string workshop and can see a performer that looks headed for a great solo career. The way E plays, though, he'd be the one to do it. Just, wow. Kinda makes me feel a little intimidated, as it does all us first years. I hope he wins the concerto comp, really. I'd really love to hear him play that piece with orchestra. (he's a violinist, btw)
