'You've got a friend'

I am still buzzing from the gig tonight. It was amazing. More on that in just a moment.
All up, I've had an awesome day.
Slept in for a while, relaxed morning, then M (friend from Indo class) came over and we went bowling. Neither of us had been in years, and we both suck. So it was highly amusing. I still lost - but ended up getting a higher score than I usually do. Great fun! We then wandered around a shopping centre, drank yummy smoothies and headed back to my place to watch 'Fantastic Mr Fox'. Which was actually a pretty good movie, much funnier than we expected it to be. The one thing I loved more than anything was how they replaced any swearing with the word 'cuss'. For example, 'what the cuss is going on here?' So good. Oh, and them 'swearing' at each other, totally heated argument using that word almost constantly. I thought it was a brilliant censoring technique.
Then it was off to the benefit gig for those affected by the floods in Queensland at the moment, after a mini sleep to try and get rid of pesky cramps. I got there later than I had planned to, and I arrive to be told by
snuggle_monster that SHE FREAKING MET WASHINGTON. And not only that, but talked to her for TWENTY MINUTES about composition etc. And that she spoke briefly to Dan Sultan. I CAN'T EVEN DESCRIBE HOW JEALOUS I AM. God. *flails*
I was supposed to be there by that point GAHHH.
(I don't begrudge her that though. We decided that it was a sign that this year is going to be amazing. Yep.)
After some struggles finding a car park and drama about ID (
thalia03 forgot hers and had to get her mum to bring it) we made it inside, and ended up sitting on the smaller stage across from the main one. The first 3 acts were good, but to be honest we weren't paying too much attention. Not focused attention anyway. Then Washington came out and we were struck again by how awesome she is. I still can't get over how much of a 'jazz kid' she is, so to speak. She had completely changed the accompaniment for one of the songs, probably just because she could. It sounded brilliant. We were disappointed when she only played 4 songs.
That disappointment didn't last long, however, because next up was Dan Sultan. Not only is he gorgeous (I may or may not have swooned) his voice was simply breathtaking. I have an album of his, and it's great, but him singing live is something else entirely. I was completely and utterly entranced. I teared up during the second song, and I don't even know why. Generally lyrics are what sets me off, but this time it was just the pure intensity I think. Then, he was introducing his last song and explained how it was a father singing of his love for his daughter. He mentioned a line of an Aboriginal language, and as soon as he did I practically burst with excitement as I knew which song it was. It's from Bran Nue Dae, and it is beautiful. Tonight was no different. Completely captivating. I couldn't get the silly smile off my face. This is the song here, I have to include it.

The last performer of the night was Missy Higgins. I was really looking forward to hearing her, actually, as I've had her music for a while but hadn't had the opportunity to see her live. She was amazing. Her voice is so much more powerful that it seems on her recordings. Wow. And the new songs she sang were beautiful - the lyrics in the one she sang with her brother particularly so.
Yep. Megan Washington, Dan Sultan, and then Missy Higgins. My brain melted into a puddle of goo.
And then there was an impromptu encore with most of the performers - hastily organised by Missy Higgins' brother, of all people. They sang 'You've Got A Friend' with perfect harmonies, of course. It was a really touching and apt way to end a benefit concert.
They also auctioned off a guitar, and a flag designed by Bertie Blackman, both of which went for $2000 or close to it. I was impressed.
Ooh and I also ended up buying a signed event poster. Because it was for a good cause and I could.

You just call out my name
And you know, wherever I am
I'll come running
To see you again
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall
All you've got to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

Haha, awesome, particularly to musos like you. XD
No idea who this Dan Sultan guy is, but I'll have to check his songs out now.

Date: 2011-01-21 05:27 am (UTC)I've never seen Fantastic Mr. Fox - foxes are my favorite animal so you'd think I'd be first in line to see it but I'm a little put off by the art style, it's...not very pretty. Maybe someday I'll watch, just because well, they're foxes! haha XD
