Father Bob Maguire - you are awesome. Yep.

I love that his 'clarification that he didn't say he would marry a gay couple' ended up being closer to 'I can't because the law says I can't but I would provide pastoral support to any same-sex couples who wanted me to say a few ritual words' and so on. So, basically, 'I can't until it's legal but I have no problem participating in ceremonies for anyone'

People like him give me hope. <3

For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, he's a Catholic priest in Australia who has essentially come out and said the above.  And is getting a whole lot of media coverage.
The way he said it, he obviously still values the work he does as a priest and as a part of the Catholic church, made me ridiculously happy. <3

And now that I've rambled about that, I will tell you that I saw Ame today, bought those English books, and am now going to settle down into doing a couple of memes. So this will end up quite long, I assure you. HAHAHA Oh I just remembered, one of the books I had to buy was Hamlet. On the cover, there is a picture of Jude Law. It was a bit epic.

Oh! Last night I actually cleaned out my 'I-don't-know-where-it-goes-so-it-goes-here' drawer. At 2am. There's probably something wrong with me, I clean late at night far too often.

Now, because I have been tagged by two separate people, I'm actually going to do this. (btw this also has a lot to do with the fact that I ended up not having to go to work tonight. sweet!)

A) People who have been tagged must write their answers on their journal and replace any question that they dislike with a new, original question.

B) Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you.

6 will have to do, everyone else I'd normally mention has already done it/been tagged by someone else XD

9. What was the last text message you received?
Well, it's from snuggle_monster. And is one of a stream of messages to I will type a few of them. Just an example of the way we text each other...
I JUST CHECKED FB OHMANOHMANOHMAN
Oh. I wonder who would *ever* fit that description.
I bet I won't
XD
I bet I'll hate it.

10. What websites do you always visit when you go online?
Facebook, email, livejournal, twitter

11. What is your next big planned purchase?
Tickets. Yep. Vague as all hell.

12. If you could afford to go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

$14 an hour at one job (but with loading for nights/weekends), $20 an hour at the other.

19. What is your dream job?
At this moment in time it's a professional (as in, the big productions that tour) it orchestra. That in combination with other work based on my violin.

20. What's the last good movie you saw?
127 Hours. It was a good movie - but I won't be watching it again due to the gory nature of a couple of scenes. Moreover, the intense physical reaction I had to it. That was pretty bad.

I find it really interesting that the artists I consider my absolute favourites all have really similar playcounts, as do all those I really like but are the next tier down. There are 10 between the 100-200 mark. Tells you how I listen to music, I guess. The things I like, I like pretty evenly XD
The Beatles surprised me, actually. I didn’t think I listened to them that often.

What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
(Michael Buble)
I don't remember. Probably 'Home'.

What is your favourite album by 2?
(Washington)
Such a hard question. ... I Believe You Liar. It's totally not her debut album or anything.

What is your favourite lyric that 1 has sung?
(Glee Cast)
HAHAH Oh man that's far too hard. Here, this is one of them.
'Gosh, your lips look delicious' tehehehehe can't think of serious ones sorryyyy

How many times have you seen 11 live?
(The Corrs)
I never have. Sadly.

What is your favorite song by 7?
(Paolo Nutini)
'Pencil Full of Lead' is my ultimate 'happy' song. It reminds me of how lucky I am <3

What is a good memory you have involving 20?
(Sufjan Stevens)
Not really someone I'd associate many good memories - his stuff is generally sad. But it's beautiful. Oh! The mixtape/cd H made me included one of his songs so that counts =)

Is there a song by 3 that makes you sad?
(Newton Faulkner)
Oh, yes. There are a few. 'Uncomfortably Slow' and 'So Much'.

What is your favorite lyric that 14 has sung?
(Angus & Julia Stone)
Oh wow, weird, I was just thinking about how good would it be if this question was for them. There are a lot, but this is from 'Hollywood'.
'I blame you Hollywood, for showing me things you never should show a young girl, in this cruel world.'

What is your favorite song by 19?
(Sara Bareilles)
'King of Anything', 'Uncharted' and 'Gonna Get Over You'
Nope. I actually can't choose.

How did you first get into 22?
(The All-American Rejects)
I think pebblegosling gave me some of their stuff a while back. /generic answer that could apply to lots of my music

What was the first song you heard by 21?
(Between the Trees)
'White Lines and Red Lights' - it's still my favourite song of theirs.

What is your favorite song by 4?
(Regina Spektor)
'The Call' - I love it.

What is a good memory you have involving 13?
(Colbie Caillat)
I bought the album in Indonesia, oddly enough, so coming home and listening to it. It's good chill-out music.

Is there a song by 23 that makes you sad?
(We the Kings)
Not particularly!

What is your favorite album of 15?
(The Beatles)
Is it bad that my favourite is an album of their songs covered by other artists? Because I can honestly say I love the 'Across the Universe' soundtrack...

What is your favorite lyric that 9 has sung?
(Darren Criss)
Alright, there are a few here. Even if I limit myself to his original stuff =P
'He likes himself in his art, but not his art so much'
'I'm just a dumb human, like you'
The whole of 'Not Alone'
'To witches and wizards and magical beasts...' yeah okay couldn't help it.

How many times have you seen 5 live?
(Arashi)
HAH
None. XD

What is your favorite album by 12?
(Mumford & Sons)
Again, they only have one... 'Sigh no More'

What is a good memory you have involving 25?
(Alan Menken)
SO MANY SO MANY SO MANY.
Soundtrack to my childhood. Pretty much. <3

What was the first song you heard by 18?
(Vampire Weekend)
'Oxford Comma' I think

'Steer'

Kudos to anyone who got through all that. Now, I am off to read the new chapters of two of my favourite fics.
Bye!

But it makes me very happy to hear the from Bob McGuire too. Being brought up in the dkfnvdfkvndjklbnrfj;bn-insanely-conservative-and-behind-the-times-to-the-point-of-ridiculousness Catholic church myself, and suffering eternal frustration at SO many of their 'morals', hearing a LEADER of the church say something like that really does give hope. If he can 'essentially' (more or less) believe in gay marriage rights, AND still deliver mass without God burning him into a hole in the ground all the way to hell, then why can't all the other priests?

Something about the way he defended himself, and his tone, and he managed to phrase it in such away that he got his (controversial) point across without being offensive to either party...
I'm a little in awe of that. More than a little, actually. He was just so genuine, it made me so happy.

It's a rare example of someone who actually loves people like the church professes to. And not just saying that. Backing that up with his views on other issues.

This whole Gay Priest thing intrigues me. I mean I have no idea what to make of it all it just seems so weird the Catholic church are keeping him... don't you think it strange?

I mean I am happy for him but I do think this may cause a lot of old school Catholics to go "OMFG NO!"

Date: 2011-02-16 02:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rdm-ation.livejournal.com
Oh, yes, it's strange. That's part of the reason it makes me so happy to hear him say stuff like that.

It's the way he's said it. He's obviously a really really smart, diplomatic guy. He hasn't said anything outright that is against policy, or whatever, so people are in an uproar over him but they can't sack him for what he's said. (they did try to force him to retire last year but he wouldn't go)

I'm Catholic but I'm in support of gay marriage so I think this is great. I'm sure many Catholics are going to shake their heads at this. :\

Youre the second person I know who has mentioned Vampire Weekend. I have someone on my flist who loooooves them. :)

The RENT soundtrack is ♥.

Is Maguire gay, or has he said? And is there any video of the speech you're talking about? (too lazy to look this up for myself...)

I have no idea. If he is, he would have had to hide it pretty well to get where he is I think. >.>

I can't find video, I'll keep trying on the news websites, but in the meantime here's an article where he's quoted.

Maybe, yeah. Especially since I heard of a priest in the US who openly opposed Prop 8 in California (which made gay marriage illegal) and I know he was gay, and I think he was removed from the church.

He says he doesn't have a personal opinion on gay civil unions, so I guess that's a no. Thanks for finding the article - as you know I'm pretty interested in this stuff. :)

It's so frustrating for me to hear about churches/religious systems that can't discuss things openly. That's pretty common, I guess, but that would stress me out so much. :/

One of my major issues with the Catholic church... (I'm not Catholic, but I hear stories, and it makes me sad/frustrated)

Also one of the things I've become disillusioned with church at the moment. Ah well, I'll find somewhere to go eventually.

I told my friend about how you're really interested in this kind of thing, and that you're planning on going to seminary and she was really pleased to hear that. (She is catholic, incidentally XD)
